Gokanosho Mysterious Expanse  Home to the Heike Legend

A secluded spot hidden in the mountains of Kyushu. According to legend, the grandchild of Taira no Kiyomori, who fell in the battle of Dannoura, fled Kiyotsune's forces to this area. Upon arrival, he fired five arrows and settled Nitao, Momiki, Shiiba, Hagi and Kureko. This is the origin of these five settlements having the general title of "Gokanosho". Of particular note is the foliage in fall, which paints the mountains and valleys dazzling colors.

Shohinken (National Site of Scenic Beauty)

A teahouse built by the 4th head of the Matsui family, Naoyuki, for his mother, Suho Inni, in the first year of Genroku(1688). Flowers bloom each season, with the Higo Japanese Iris that bloom at the end of May~start of June being particularly famous. The name "Shohinken" comes from the sound of the wind blowing through the pines that was heard on the Yatsushiro sea beach behind the building when construction first started.

Honmachi Arcade A stroll through town, relish the fun of taking a side trip

A beloved shopping center that has continued on for 40 years, getting its start in Showa 48. A 700-meter-long straight line from Honmachi 1 chome to 3 chome, it's the second largest in Kumamoto prefecture. In addition to delicious gourmet items and sweets, there are various long-term stores from the area, as well as many different seasonal events and activities.
