The Yatsushiro (Kōda) Ware Agano kiln
Antique pottery cherished by the Hosokawa family
for its elegant colors
Known as both Yatsushiro and Kōda ware, the
pottery began in the early Edo period when Kizo
Agano, a member of the Hosokawa family who was
transferred to Higo, started it in the Kōda
township of Yatsushiro, near Hinagu.
Yatsushiro(Kōda) ware is characterized by the
technique of inlaying, where a pattern is carved
into a half-dried base, and feldspar is embedded
into the recesses of the carving. Credit cards
are accepted.
