Known as both Yatsushiro and Kōda ware, the pottery began in the early Edo period when Kizo Agano, a member of the Hosokawa family who was transferred to Higo, started it in the Kōda township of Yatsushiro, near Hinagu. Yatsushiro(Kōda) ware is characterized by the technique of inlaying, where a pattern is carved into a half-dried base, and feldspar is embedded into the recesses of the carving.
